Videoconference on
Hepatitis C
Virus
The Bureau of Cultural & Educational affaires in Montréal
- Canada in collaboration with the Department of Missions and Cultural affaires
in the Ministry of Higher Education in Egypt organized a videoconference on
Hepatitis C Virus in both Egypt and Canada.
The objectives of the
conference:
1- Identifying priorities for prevention,
treatment and research in Egypt on hepatitis C.
2- Discussing
mechanisms of collaboration in the area of Hepatitis C between Canada &
Egypt.
The Egyptian part was represented by Prof. Dr. Maged El Sherbini,
Assistant Minister for Scientific Research, Prof. Dr. Wahid Doss, Head, National
committee on viral hepatitis, Director of NHTMRI and Prof. Dr. Hamdala Zedan,
Director, VACSERA Holding Company for Biological Products &
Vaccines.
The Canadian part was represented by Prof. Dr. Naglaa Shoukry
(of Egyptian origin), Accredited Professor, Department of microbiology and
immunology, University of Montréal-Director, Viral hepatitis research group,
CRCHUM and Mohammed Salah, Doctoral student, Centre Hospitalier de
l’Université de Montréal CHUM.
Prof. Dr. Nebal El Tanbouly, Consul,
Cultural & Educational Affairs, chaired the session with the participation
of Dr Sherif Khashana, Scientific coordinator.
The following steps were
taken in follow up on the meeting recommendations:
1. A
contact is initiated with the national director of health promotion at the
Canadian Liver Foundation (CLF) and the
Canadian Ethnocultural Council to engage Egyptian communities
living in Canada in hepatitis C awareness.
2. A meeting is
arranged with Dr. Marc Bilodeau, the project director of the National Canadian
Research and Training
Program for
Hepatitis C (NCRTP-HepC), and Dr. Nebal El Tanbouly to explore the possibility
of collaboration in the
area of research and
training with Egypt
3. A seminar on raising the awareness
on the problem of Hepatitis C in Egypt is scheduled on the World Hepatitis Day
on the 19th of may 2009, in Montréal University (
